GRIS ART RECREATION [GAME ART]

This project was an exercise in analysing the artwork of a game and recreating it using the same (or similar) mediums and techniques. Gris (Devolver Digital, 2018) is one of my personal favourites and one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. Curious about how it was created I chose to research & recreate Conrad Roset’s art.

The first task involved a thorough art analysis to learn about Roset’s influences and techniques, the second task consisted of an exact recreation of a character or in game scene, and an interpretation of it, so to create something new in the same style.

I’ve recreated the main character but gave her a new pose.

I also created a completely new character, the mother, in the same style using the reoccurring statues in the game as reference.

I also recreated a promotional image of a large view of a level.

The difference in the proportions is due to having done all the art by eye and not tracing anything. Not tracing the work was important to me because it helped me understand the linework and flow of it. This was not an easy task and things like recreating watercolours with digital brushes and drawing the trees with their perfect curves by hand were especially challenging. Overall this piece took around 80 hours to complete.

I’ve also created a short animation of the run cycle as the beautiful and flowing animations in the game fascinate me!

All artwork was created using Procreate on the iPad Pro.
